Case Studies for Our Business Owner Services

  • Case Study: Monetizing a small business.

  • Scenario:

A successful business owner is looking to monetize part of their business while locking down key employees who are critical to the business.

    Solution:

GMFG devised an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) strategy that involved selling a portion of the business to its employees. The employees would participate in the growth of the company while the business owner could diversify some of their net worth outside of the company by providing a liquidity event.

In addition, we created executive benefit/compensation packages that would tie down top-level employees for the foreseeable future through a golden handcuff strategy, which provides future benefits if the employees stay with the company for the next 10–15 years.

Finally, we developed an annual strategy to diversify their investment portfolio by liquidating some restricted options in a tax-efficient manner and reinvesting in other assets.

  • Case Study: Passing down a small business.

  • Scenario:

A business owner wants to pass their business down to the next generation without overcomplicating the process.

    Solution:

GMFG came up with a tax-efficient, productive strategy that utilized the profits of the company to pay for the buy-out, therefore not requiring significant outside capital to be injected into the business. We structured this strategy into a two-step process so the outgoing owner could retain control over the business while transitioning it successfully to the next generation.
